Wow, You're on a Pole!
The Benefits of Pole and Exotic Dancing
June 12, 2008
Sauntering…slithering…across a room and sliding down a pole in a room full of mirrors can do one of two things to you. It can either make you ask the instructor to turn the lights waaaay down or it can bring out your inner diva (uh…we're putting that nicely).
If the thought of reading about taking a pole or exotic dancing class makes you want to immediately click away from this article, then STOP! Just take the time to read a little further, as you might be surprised by the physical and psychological benefits of learning these dance techniques.
Let's start with a little warning, though. Depending on where you're taking your classes, you may blush a little when you hear some of the music selections (that's if you're one of the modest).
But music aside, getting on the pole (or on the floor, if you will) can tone parts of your body that you haven't used in years, or never knew you had. You're using your own body weight to stress your muscles and the constant moving provides great aerobic exercise. Exotic dancing focuses on increasing flexibility through active and passive stretching, building core strength, and improving the fluidity of your movements.
So, what's the difference between pole and exotic dancing? Pole dancing involves "dancing" on the pole, by doing spins, inversions, and other tricks, while exotic dancing can include floor work, and lap or chair dancing (where the chair is used as a prop). Any of these can include striptease, if you'd like to perform it for others.
But, in addition to the physical benefits, the psychological benefits are quite amazing, too. While taking these classes, you learn to get in touch with your body. You realize that you still can be a sensual being, despite the hustle and bustle of your everyday life. Getting comfortable with your body, regardless of your size, is the biggest benefit of taking exotic dance lessons.
