Top 80s Looks for Moms
October 2, 2008
If your children are constantly groaning that you are stuck in the 1980’s you just might become the coolest mom in the neighborhood. Yes, that’s right ladies, 80s looks are back with a vengeance! If you can remember a time when MTV was all the rage and the likes of Madonna and Duran Duran were topping the charts, you need to dig deep into your closet and dust off your old clothes for an 80s revival!
Whether you grew up in the 80s or just fondly remember them, one of your most prominent memories will probably be the huge and fun hairstyles. What really set this decade apart in terms of hair was the diversity, and more hair was always better. I remember pop stars with heavily gelled, flipped, colored, long, spiky, or just plain big hair making really bold fashion statements. The 80s clothing pretty much matched the hairstyles; diverse, fierce, and flamboyant. Abandon your thoughts of washing up, homework, and tripping over building blocks, and prepare to take a trip down memory lane.
Vintage 80s Clothing Styles
Penny Loafers – Though the traditional penny loafers were masculine-looking shoes with a flattish heel, they have been somewhat reinvented for the new season. You might remember decorating yours with a penny, or even a dime. The new modern style penny loafers yield much higher heels and are available in a huge range of colors. This is great news if you want to give yourself a little more height, but be warned, the bigger heels take a little more out of your butt and calves!

Members Only Jackets – These jackets were seen as a status symbol at the height of their popularity, and are once again becoming increasingly covetable. You might have a nylon version in your closet, but the new styles have made the transition into leather and silk. The Members Only style has also morphed into a collection of sophisticated looking minidresses, which flatter a more curvaceous figure.
Sperry Topsiders – I remember these shoes the first time around as having laces which ALWAYS came undone. Despite the fact that Topsiders only seemed to be available in an extremely ugly brown, and despite the fact that many of us 80s children had never set foot on a boat, these were total must-haves. Well, the designers have taken our gripes into consideration and come up with some funky ballet-style footwear which is practical, comfortable and pretty snazzy.
Zipper Leggings – In the 80s most stylish women were wearing baggy sweatshirts over zipper leggings. If you are unfamiliar, or have successfully managed to repress the memory, these leggings are super-tight with zipper tracks around the ankles. They are also very unforgiving if you are carrying a little extra poundage. That said, the colors available this season are loud, in-your-face, and guaranteed to make a statement.
The 80s were a time of complete fashion anarchy. Why not get some of your girlfriends together to share pictures, dig out clothes, or (even better) shop for some new 80s stuff? Come on moms! It’s time to show your kids how wild you used to be!
