Work It:
A Guide to Your Fall Makeover
September 1 , 2008
Why leave your resolutions for change to the new year when a new season is upon us? Fall into some new patterns this autumn with a new wardrobe.
Fall fashion is all about rich color tones and warmer fabrics. For maximum versatility, build your basics (pants, coats, skirts, shoes) in fall’s neutrals: black, white, charcoal gray and dark brown. Spice things up with tops, handbags and accessories in jewel tones like plum, emerald, ruby red and sapphire. Animal prints and dark floral prints will also be hot as the weather cools.
What styles should you embrace for autumn? Let’s start from the bottom up!
Shoes: Use what you have from summer by pairing ballerina slippers and low high heels with footed tights (not socks!). Lightweight boots- either ankle or knee high- will also be in.
Bottoms: For slacks and jeans, wide leg styles are flattering on most body shapes. Skirts will be mid-length, with A line styles the most flattering, or you can reuse the miniskirts from summer over a pair of tights.
Tops: Lightweight cable knit and cashmere sweaters in the jewel tones mentioned above will add color to your basics and look timelessly classy.
Jackets: Wool tweed riding jackets, peacoats, and mid- length belted trench coats are classics that will never go out of style. If you’re watching your budget, select a color that’s going to go with most of your outfits. Black, gray, navy blue and khaki are the most versatile colors.
Accessories: Hats are a great way to keep your head warm and your hair safe from the wind. Bucket hats are great for this season and are available in lightweight wool. For jewelry, think layered necklaces, chunky bracelets or pieces with bold color.
Remember, fall can be the perfect time to refresh your mind and your wardrobe.
